Resumen
Esclavos en Tenerife y La Gomera durante el siglo XIX: ¿una pervivencia singular?
El presente trabajo tiene como finalidad poner de relieve la situación singular de dos espacios insulares, el Sur de Tenerife y ciertos lugares de la isla de La Gomera, en relación con la esclavitud durante el siglo XIX. Teóricamente la esclavitud ya había sido suprimida en la Península Ibérica, archipiélagos adyacentes de Baleares y Canarias y, asimismo, en las posesiones africanas del Golfo de Guinea. Se reflexiona sobre las causas de la pervivencia de la esclavitud en ciertas comarcas de Tenerife y La Gomera.

Summary
Slaves in Tenerife and La Gomera during the 19th century: a unique survival?
The purpose of this paper is to highlight the unique situation of two island areas—the south of Tenerife and certain parts of the island of La Gomera—in relation to slavery during the 19th century. In theory, slavery had already been abolished in the Iberian Peninsula, the neighboring archipelagos of the Balearic and Canary Islands, as well as in the African possessions in the Gulf of Guinea. This paper reflects on the reasons for the persistence of slavery in certain districts of Tenerife and La Gomera.
